When you don’t feel like being bothered and are just looking for a great view of the Douro, you can run away from the tourist-filled areas and find refuge in a local secret, Virtudes.

Passeio das Virtudes

You’ll find the Passeio das Virtudes on one of the terraces surrounding the Douro and around a fountain built in 1619. It’s a local hipster secret and has been the stage to Porto’s Primavera Sound warm-up.

Portuguese Photography Centre

The Portuguese Photography Centre is located in an old prison, which once upon a time held illustrious Portuguese names such as Camilo Castelo Branco and João Chagas. Entry is free.

Palácio de Cristal

The Palácio de Cristal is one of the biggest green areas of the city. With a privileged view of the Douro, the Palácio is surrounded by a garden inhabited by peacocks and ducks. One of the municipal libraries is also located at the gardens.

Where to eat

Vira Lata

Rua do Doutor Barbosa de Castro, 74. Portuguese and Spanish “petiscos” can be found here: padrón peppers, prego with queijo da serra, Portuguese spicy sausage and revuelto. There are also vegetarian options. $

Taberna Santo António

Rua das Virtudes, 32. This is not a restaurant for those who are looking for modern cuisine, tapas or unknown ingredients. The Taberna de Sto. António is homey, typical and very Portuguese. $

Tia Orlanda

Rua das Taipas, 113. Mozambique style prawns, crab curry and chicken muamba… Tia Orlanda is the unique opportunity of experimenting the cuisine of Mozambique without leaving Porto. $$

7 Maravilhas

Rua das Taipas, 17C. Spicy potatoes, falafel, goulash: the cuisine of 7 Maravilhas (literally, 7 Wonders) has no address. Have a little “petisco” and eat some “finger food”. $$$

Belos Aires

Rua de Belmonte, 104. Argentinian cuisine for fans of good meat and tuna steaks with sweet potato. Must try: Argentinian empanadas. $$$

Tuareg da Baixa

Travessa da Laje, 46. At 20:30, Tuareg opens its doors for those who want to travel to Egypt, smoke shisha and relax to the sound of music. $

 Bus (STCP) 200, 201, 207, 208, 301, 501, 507, 601, 602 (paragem Palácio de Cristal ou paragem Hospital de Santo António).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
